A tight lower bound for optimal bin packing

چکیده
In this paper, we present an eecient algorithm to compute a tighter lower bound for the one-dimensional bin packing problem. The time complexity of the algorithm is O(n log n). We have simulated the algorithm on randomly generated bin packing problems with item sizes drawn uniformly from (a; b], 0 a < b B. If our lower bound is used, on average, the error of BFD is less than 2%. For a + b B, the error is less than 0.003%.

Extending Two-Dimensional Bin Packing Problem: Consideration of Priority for Items
In this paper a two-dimensional non-oriented guillotine bin packing problem is studied when items have different priorities. Our objective is to maximize the total profit which is total revenues minus costs of used bins and wasted area. A genetic algorithm is developed to solve this problem where a new coding scheme is introduced. To evaluate the performance of the proposed GA, first an upper b...
متن کاملThe Tight Bound of First Fit Decreasing Bin-Packing Algorithm Is FFD(I) <= 11/9OPT(I) + 6/9
First Fit Decreasing is a classical bin packing algorithm: the items are ordered into their nonincreasing order, and then in this order the next item is always packed into the first bin where it fits. For an instance I let FFD(I) and OPT (I) denote the number of the used bins by algorithm FFD, and an optimal algorithm, respectively. We show in this paper that FFD(I) ≤ 11/9OPT (I) + 6/9, (1) and...
متن کاملA Tighter Lower Bound for Optimal Bin Packing
In this paper, we present an O(n1ogn) algorithm to compute a tighter lower bound for the one-dimensional bin packing problem. We have simulated the algorithm on randomly generated bin packing problems with item sizes drawn uniformly from (a, b], where 0 5 a < b 5 B and B is bin size. Using our lower bound, the average error of BFD is less than 2%. For a + b > B, the error is less than 0.003%. K...
متن کاملA Tight Approximation for Fully Dynamic Bin Packing without Bundling
We consider a variant of the classical Bin Packing Problem, called Fully Dynamic Bin Packing. In this variant, items of a size in (0,1] must be packed in bins of unit size. In each time step, an item either arrives or departs from the packing. An algorithm for this problem must maintain a feasible packing while only repacking a bounded number of items in each time step. We develop an algorithm ...
متن کاملBounds for online bin packing with cardinality constraints
We study a bin packing problem in which a bin can contain at most k items of total size at most 1, where k ≥ 2 is a given parameter. Items are presented one by one in an online fashion. We analyze the best absolute competitive ratio of the problem and prove tight bounds of 2 for any k ≥ 4. Additionally, we present bounds for relatively small values of k with respect to the asymptotic competitiv...
